Cannabis culture has its own distinct language and while an outsider may think that terms like joint, blunt, and spliff are interchangeable, there are some distinct differences between the three. Before heading to your local dispensary, brush up on the lingo and understand the unique characteristics of the three broad categories of rolled cannabis.

Joint, blunt, spliff: three words that get used interchangeably right up until someone passes you the wrong one. The differences are real, they change how each one smokes and feels, and knowing them makes you a smarter shopper. Here is the whole thing in plain language.

The one-line answers

Joint: cannabis rolled in a thin smoking paper. Nothing else in it.
Blunt: cannabis rolled in a tobacco-leaf wrap or hollowed-out cigar shell, typically bigger than a joint.
Spliff: cannabis and tobacco blended together, rolled in regular smoking paper.

Joints: the classic for a reason

The joint is pure cannabis in a paper made from hemp, rice, or wood pulp. Thin papers burn clean and let the flower’s own flavor lead, which is exactly why the joint remains the default. Dispensary pre-rolls are almost all joints, machine- or hand-rolled to burn evenly, and they are the easiest possible way to try a new strain without committing to an eighth.

Blunts: bigger, slower, heavier

A blunt swaps the paper for a tobacco leaf. That changes three things. Size: blunts hold noticeably more cannabis. Burn: the thick wrap burns slow, which is why blunts suit a group session. Effect: the wrap carries nicotine, which adds its own buzz on top of the cannabis. Modern dispensary blunts often use hemp wraps instead, keeping the slow burn and losing the tobacco entirely, which a lot of people prefer once they try it.

Spliffs: the European habit

A spliff blends tobacco directly into the cannabis before rolling. It is the standard in much of Europe, where it stretches cannabis further and smooths the burn. The trade-offs are obvious: less cannabis per roll, nicotine in every puff, and tobacco’s health baggage. If you are tobacco-free, there is no reason to start here.

How to choose

Want the flower to speak for itself? Joint. Long session with friends and a taste for something heavier? Blunt, or a hemp-wrap blunt if you want the ritual without the tobacco. Trying to moderate? A small pre-roll beats rolling your own oversized anything.
